What is Juneteenth and Why Does It Matter?

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom. This day, now known as Juneteenth, marks the official end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17th, 2021.
